26 year-old Breckin started his career at Rotherham United where his dad John is Assistant Manager under Ronnie Moore. He made his Millers debut in November 1993 but left Millmoor in 1997 as at the time Breckin was out-of-contract and the Millers had just been relegated to Division Three.
The former Chesterfield captain has made over 200 league appearances and can play in either central defence or right-back. He has also scored 17 goals throughout his career. Before moving to the JJB he was the subject of bids from Bradford City, Preston, Sheffield Wednesday and also Premiership new-comers West Brom during his time at Saltergate.
However, Breckin was eventually snapped up by Latics in June 2002 as there was just a year left on his contract at Saltergate. The fee was undisclosed but was believed to be in the region of £50,000.
